Did you see the Super Blood Moon eclipse on September 27-28???

What a rare and special event!!!

When I found out that this super blood moon eclipse would be happening in September, I immediately started surfing the net to get all important infos.

I don’t want to bother you with all the details, but these are the hard facts around this special full moon ๐Ÿ˜‰

BOTTOM LINE:

* The 2015 Harvest Moon took place on the night of September 27-28 for us in Jeri.

* The Harvest Moon, which is the full moon closest to the Septembe requinox, is characterized by a shorter-than-usual time between moonrises for several nights in a row around full moon.

* This September 2015 full moon featured the fourth of four total lunar eclipses in the ongoing lunar tetrad.

* Thus this eclipse was called a Blood Moon!

We were in an awesome location to see this spectacle. The total lunar eclipse was visible for most of North America and all of South America after sunset of September 27. For eastern South America (that’s where we are!!!) and Greenland, the greatest eclipse happened around midnight September 27-28.

In Jeri the total eclipse started around 23:11 and ended around 00:23 a.m.

It was hard for me to imagine that we would be able to see the full moon all in red color for more than one hour! But it was true!! And it was spectacular, amazingly beautiful and peaceful!!

It was a quiet Sunday night in Jeri, people were out in the village to watch the moon from special spots like the famous Sunset Dune or Serrote or the beach. You could see many people walking around with torch lights in the night to find their way to their favourite spot to watch the eclipse.

The days after this special full moon there was a big swell warming many surfer hearts during high tide in the mornings and late afternoons!

For those of you who would like to know more about it, here are some infos and definitions of terms ๐Ÿ™‚

* Super Moon

It happened to be the closest supermoon of 2015. A moon is called supermoon when it is visible closest to earth, thus it appears 14% bigger and about 30% brighter.

* Harvest Full Moon

In the Northern Hemishpere it was a so called Harvest Moon, whereas in Southern Hemisphere it was the first full moon of spring.

How is the Harvest Moon different from other full moons?

– It’s the full moon falling closest to the autumn equinox.

– Autumn full moons (like the Hunter’s Moons or Harvest Moon) are different because the path of the sun, moon and planets (= the ecliptic) makes a narrow angle with the evening horizon and the moon appears noticeably farther north for several nights in a row.

– Thus the moon rises earlier than usual, about 50 minutes later daily.

* Blood Moon

This September full moon was also called a Blood moon because it presents the fourth and final eclipse of a “lunar tetrad”: four straight total eclipses of the moon, spaced at six lunar months (full moons) apart. Wow!
