A day in life of a kitesurf digital nomad in Jericoacoara

 In Uncategorized

Beach, wind, waves and fiber optics

I used to think that doing the same things day after day is what makes the life boring. Actually it only depends on the life you choose. I am quite happy with my groundhog day – day after day in Jericoacoara. Handling business online (as a digital nomad if you will) and enjoying kitesurfing in one of the best spots in the world.

It’s a new day in Jericoacoara

As Ceara is near ecuador, we get the daylight 6am – 6pm all year round, which is one of the reasons I like to get up early. I am usually up 5:30 with the first signs of Sun, which is as natural to the metabolism as it gets. With the perfect climate (daily max 32C, daily min 26C), I have no need to have glass on the windows, AC or anything similar…

Pre- breakfast routines of a digital nomad

A true morning person as I am, I wake up on full power and prefer a morning workout to coffee. Many aspects of my life here depend on the nature, the choice of morning workout being one of them. With the low tide (anything up to 1.5m) I go running barefoot (ofc, I am barefoot 24h, the streets are all sand here) on the beach, followed by the sand dune climbing and a dip in the ocean. The sun and wind are still light, and it brings me so much peace. On my way back, the people in my street already start waking up and opening their homes, some of them already ready with homemade tapioca or pao de quejio, or just a chat and a smile. Smile at the world and the world smiles back…

On the high tide mornings (the tide shifts for about 1h daily, and with the full moon goes to 3m; again, syncing the life with the natural phenomena, as depending on the Moon and the tide you may or may not be able to pass by the shore and reach the next village), I stay at home and do my workout on my rooftop. As long as there are no walls, I am happy. From up there I see my friend doing his own groundhog day and passing by my street at the same hour. We do a “bom dia” with a smile, and continue happy knowing that one more perfect day has just started.

Fiber optics and working from home

I work on my balcony. As long aspousada atlantis jericoacoara fiber optic internet digital nomads there are no walls, I am happy. I listen to reggae and do my breaks in the hammock – the most genius invention ever, as it allows you to simple do nothing and not feel weird about it. I don’t miss coworking space really, as there are so many opportunities for socializing here, that I actually like my quiet mornings at home. With fiber optics that is 🙂

Kitesurfing around Jericoacoara

As we’re hitting the midday, the leaves of thpousada atlantis jericoacoara kitesurfe palm tree in my garden start moving. As my clients are mostly in Europe, all the calls are finished by that time, the perfect time zone diff. Around 2pm I get out of my house, with my kite in my harness hanging on my shoulder and my board. And then I just let go… Sometimes to Tatajuba, but mostly to Preá, meeting old and new friends on the way, smiling at the world and getting the love back. From Preá I go home by kite. Strong and warm wind, highly likely the most reliable on the planet, and ridiculously hot water, above 25C for sure. The wind forecast we don’t even check, but the tide and swell we do, and this is what makes our sessions differ from each other. That, and all those tiny details, like the reflection of the sun on the water surface over a little cloud, that makes each downwind so special and memorable.

I like arriving back to Jeri close to the sunset, as the visual is just incredibly beautiful, and the vibe of the people celebrating yet another amazing day with music, capoeira, clapping to the Sun which is kissing the ocean…

The people of Jeri

The community is so diverse, with people coming from all over the world and with so many different backgrounds, connected by something that is bigger than a profession, class, nationality… the feeling of being connected to the nature, active, the feeling of being alive… In the same time, it’s a small place, so Il keep seeing familiar faces all the time… Sometimes a walk to do some food shopping can lead to multiple encounters and end in grabbing a coconut, beer or food with somebody… Luckily, there is no such thing as being under-dressed here, so I can always just go with the flow…

If I still have some energy left, every evening there is an opportunity to dance… In the open air… Barefoot… Samba, forro, reggae, DJs… No need for planning, you can just show up and you always meet somebody… I prefer that, as it means that I always get to do exactly what I feel like, instead of planning stuff days in advance… Feeling free…

And here we go again for another groundhog day, waking up stoked and grateful for the simple and happy life, by the ocean, 30knots wind and an amazing mix of people 🙂 🙂 🙂

How did you manage to get good wifi in Jeri? Did you rent an airbnb, or a studio or did you stay in a hostel with good internet?

Regarding internet, it became much easier over past 2 years. The optic fiber has arrived and accommodation owners have been introducing it more and more. For sure you can find it in Pousada Atlantis 🙂 In addition, 4G by TIM and Vivo works really well. I found it super helpful as a backup (I’d share the connection and then use my laptop) in case the wifi or electricity is down (doesn’t happen too often, but still) and to be online when I am outside. I have many conference calls with video and screen sharing, and I manage really well.
